Years 1-24: Discovery & Ennui

1970 Born October 6 in Boston, Massachucetts to Cecile and James Robert Boucher.

1976 The Boucher family moves to Fairfax County, Virginia, a suburb outside of Washington,DC where they continue to live to this day. • Receives first camera, a Kodak Instamatic, and begins photographing.

1982 Has secret love affair with TV personality Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman. • Draws continually throughout his youth.

1988 Suffering from suburban ennui, Jay engages in minor acts of vandalism and petty larceny, and indulges in illicit substances. • High school crush turns into long term romance with Tara Meier. • Enrolls in Art Foundation courses at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, Virgina. Strongly influenced by instructor Richard Carlyon.

1992 Graduates from Virginia Commonwealth University with BFA in Communication Art and Design. • Begins to paint from found newspaper photographs. Discovers magazine photographs of model Christy Turlington and realizes, along with the entire fashion establishment, that she is the most beautiful woman in the world. Begins to collect her image obsessively (see 1998).

1993 With help of friend David B. Gordon, uses computers to prepare photographs for paintings. • Begins teaching Art and Drawing classes to children through the Fairfax County Park Authority. • Visits New York for the first time. Views Roy Lichtenstein exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum and wonders if reproductions of his paintings aren't better than the real thing.

1994 Begins teaching Drawing classes to adults through Fairfax County Public Schools. • Passionate affair with Michele Hepburn.
