THE DISASTER PLAN OF A FAMILY OF FOUR

-Statement
-The Family
-Scenario 1: Escape from NYC
-Scenario 2: Hunker Down
-Scenario 3: Evacuation

"When a nuclear device is exploded, a large fireball is created. Everything inside of this fireball vaporizes, including soil and water, and is carried upwards. This creates the mushroom cloud that we associate with a nuclear blast, detonation, or explosion. Radioactive material from the nuclear device mixes with the vaporized material in the mushroom cloud. As this vaporized radioactive material cools, it becomes condensed and forms particles, such as dust. The condensed radioactive material then falls back to the earth; this is what is known as fallout. Because fallout is in the form of particles, it can be carried long distances on wind currents and end up miles from the site of the explosion. Fallout is radioactive and can cause contamination of anything on which it lands, including food and water supplies."

house SHELTERING-IN-PLACE
In the event of an environmental catastrophy, the family may need to remain in the home for an indefinite period of time. The Department of Homeland Security recommends having enough food and water for each person to last for three days. It would be assumed that there would be no electricity or running water. A radio with batteries would be needed so that the family could be aware of any announcements pertaining to safety.

Preparation of the home would depend upon the disaster situation. In the event of a pandemic a contageous family member would need to be quarantined in a room. A chemical or biological attack would involve sealing windows and doors.

HOME BASE
The family lives in a 19th century brownstone, with family in top level apartment. the structure is brick with wooden floors and supports. Fire escape is located in the back, and roof accessible through ladder in common hall. There are windows in each room, and ventilation from a fireplace. Attic above is insulated. Basement accessible in the event of a nuclear attack.
